Inspired by the landscapes around her, artist Ellis Holman (1997) explores the complexity of human emotions. In her solo exhibition Sight of Solitude, Holman questions our interpretation of the word “solitude”. She invites the audience to learn to look, slow down and listen again with uninhibited curiosity.

 

In 2024, Holman stayed as Artist in Residence in the Apuan Alps and travelled to the North Cape, the northernmost tip of Europe. This led to her photo series Formations: a series of images in which she uses abstraction and alienation to capture the landscape. Her photographic works require complete surrender and close observation to experience what reveals itself when you really learn to look.

 

In Beyond Perception, through audio clips, Holman takes visitors into the multifaceted meaning of the word “loneliness”. Which in English can be translated to mean both “loneliness” and “solitude”. Two translations of the same word, each conveying a totally different meaning. In the audio clips, Holman takes you along on her journey through the mountains, where she met different people and talked about what loneliness means to them and to herself.

 

At the heart of the exhibition is the installation Sight of Solitude. The interactive installation creates dense fog banks that symbolise the feeling of disconnection. When visitors connect with each other, fresh
