The exhibition *From Scratch* focuses on the creative process as an ongoing interaction between the artist and the material.
Artists Hans van der Ham, Arthur Löwen, Marieke Bolhuis, Gijs van Lith and Alexander Tinei start from their own visual language and intentions, but within the process allow room for what the material evokes, enables or limits.
Just as language shapes our way of thinking, in the artist’s hands, material becomes a sensory language that appeals to and expands our world of experience. Paint builds up in layers, wood is worked or retains its structure, and brushstrokes remain visible as direct traces of action and feeling.
Spanning five solo exhibitions, a multifaceted exploration of the language of matter unfolds. The works demonstrate how material can convey an entire world of experience and open up space for new ways of perceiving and interpreting.
